Polynesian culture from the source
Raiatea is an island of spirit(s). Like the others? Much more! It’s the holy island of the Society Islands. Located in the center of the Polynesian triangle, between New Zealand, Hawaii and Easter Island, Raiatea offers the essence of Polynesian culture. The history of Polynesian civilization can be found on this very green and mountainous island. An island of the greatest authenticity… It is the Polynesia of all time, which hosts the memory and the spirits. For instance, the marae of Taputapuatea, is a platform made of volcanic stones where Polynesian cults took place to celebrate the gods or to crown a king. The chiefs of the islands of several archipelagos throughout the Polynesian triangle gathered there. The atmosphere there is powerful. A remarkable and sacred site, classified as a UNESCO since July 2017. A recognition that underlines the importance of the site in the history and birth of the Polynesian civilization. Raiatea is an island with history and legends. To discover its mountainous cirques, its flamboyant waterfalls, its authentic villages or to meet the locals, always proud to tell a piece of history, you can easily take the only navigable river, “Faaroa”. You can also take the hiking paths.
Marie & Sébastien Coiffard, a couple of metropolitans, passionately in love with Polynesia – have chosen to settle in Raiatea, 45 minutes from Tahiti. Created in 2009 with Polynesians, a small and with delicious, fresh and cosy charm; the Opoa Beach Hotel. Facing the lagoon, the Opoa Beach Hotel offers the intimate hospitality of only 9 bungalows, spacious, decorated with the utmost care, in a tropical and marine style. The owner of the hotel, with a long experience as a chef, offers her guests all of her passion for cooking and the freshest local products. Our taste buds still remember it. A range of walking and water activities, day trips to the nearby island of Tahaa, are offered by a very welcoming team.
The spirit of Raiatea, its relief, the serenity of the place maintained by its owners, make the Opoa Beach Hotel a place out of this world, directly in touch with the local Polynesian culture.
45 minutes from the airport, and only 5 minutes from the Marae of Taputapuatea, a holy site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2017.
